After the happy birth of her third child in February 2010, Katy Hayes developed a common Strep A infection that accelerated quickly into a rare flesh-eating bacteria. Both arms and legs were amputated at Parkland Hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life.
Doctors call her a miracle. In 2012 after the completion of a rigorous, pre-operative evaluation, Katy was approved for double arm transplant at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in what will be the first such procedure performed in the United States.
Katy has moved with her family from Texas to Boston to wait for a donor, the surgery has yet to be scheduled.
